Do You Really Want to Know Your Blood Pressure?
I’ve always monitored my blood pressure using those sit down stations you find in drug store, at work, and other locations. I was interested in knowing how my pressure varied in different situations. There are a lot of options – cuff-type, wrist watch-style, and various travel options. I opted for the Omron HEM-670IT model. It can be used on your wrist – easier than putting on an arm band cuff. It’s self-inflating, and best of all, it comes with software and automatic data download to your computer. It’s a relatively small device and comes with a hard plastic travel case. It comes with a USB download cable and the required batteries. I’ve been using it for several months now and couldn’t be happier. It’s easy to use and tells you when you have it in the correct location to get an accurate reading. Downloading the data is a piece of cake. Loading the software on your computer is also easy. Best of all, the software also works with the Omron pedometers (I also ordered one of those after the good results I’ve had with the blood pressure monitor). Is it perfect? Hard to say. I’ve used it while measuring my blood pressure with other devices – it provides similar results. If you’re looking for absolute trends you’d probably need to compare with a professional reading – I have not done that yet. But it does seem to be within plus or minus a could of points — good enough to see if you pressure is changing and identify trends.

Avoid this brand
HoMedics BPA-300 TheraP Deluxe Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with DK Technology
Actually purchased HoMedics BPA-430WGN in March 2008 from Walgreens. Product seems about the same in price and features. Was very impressed with it out of the box and thought it was probably a step forward in technology and accuracy. I had not monitored my BP for a few months and was concerned to find it up about 30mm on a consistent basis. After consultation with my doctor I gradually increased my medication till pressures were near goal in the morning. This resulted in me going into cardiogenic shock (episodes of dizziness associated with SBP below 80) on 4 evenings during the next 2 months. I finally checked this machine against a mercury manometer (admittedly I should have done this much earlier) and found the SBP readings averaged over 30 mm higher with the Homedics device. I now have an Omron HEM-780 which is much more accurate. My BP is now at goal with less medication and no more nasty episodes. As we use home BP measurements more and more and base treatment decisions on them we really need machines that are certified for accuracy. Avoid this brand!
Poor Results
I was very disappointed with this blood pressure monitor and returned it for credit. The cuff is very difficult and the data was not accurate. I would not recommend for anyone who must monitor their daily blood pressure
Microlife 3AX1-4U Premium Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with Dot Matrix Technology

Ok device, worst software on planet
The device is easy to use and very portable. But, it has been many years since I’ve encountered such poorly designed and buggy software. Many features are not usable… for example: adding comments to the reading history. The button is there but no fields are enables when clicked. The cursor blinks indication entry but typing is not recognized. Even the date field can’t be changed. They both remain at 01/01/0001.
The USB software is a nightmare. You can’t assign COM port so it will interact with other USB software, like my PALM sync program. I guess if this were the only USB device on your computer you may be safe.
So, get the monitor but forget about using the software unless you love to solve puzzles.
A GREAT monitor!
I just ordered my second 3AX1-4U as a replacement to the first one that got accidentally broken.
Every day I take my 87-year-old Dad and 80-year-old Mom’s BP. They hated the arm cuff models because they hurt but love this one. Besides the customary usefulness of the immediate info from the readings, the computer link and software is amazing. Dad’s not able to get into the doctor’s office any more but the doc absolutely loves the sophisticated charts this unit generates. I mail them in to the doctor’s office each month and they’ve actually been very useful. The USB cable is a bit weird but, oddly enough, it’s been very sturdy and reliable.
When I went shopping for a replacement unit at Wal-mart they only had an arm cuff version from another manufacturer that hooks up to a computer. I really hope Microlife continues to market a software enabled wrist version for the many elderly folks that find an arm cuff version too uncomfortable.
The first set of batteries lasted almost a year! It’s really accurate and easy to use but the software needs a little effort to learn and get installed. The accompanying software CD won’t work in MS Vista but there’s a Vista-compatible version on the Microlife website that will. Make sure you install MS’s Vista service pack 1 to smooth out a few device driver bugs.
This unit is a hundred times more useful because of the computer generated charts that can be saved and used as a reference during medical treatments. They were a life saver the last time Dad ended up in the hospital. One of the resident physicians had ordered blood pressure medicine to lower Dad’s BP but cancelled the script as soon as he saw the graphs for the last few months which showed an already low BP history. Great work, Microlife!
